Day 8 – August 8, 2025 – Leaving Iceland and Flights to Birmingham.

Image
We got up at 5:30 am to start the process of disembarkation and what will be 16+ hrs of travel from Reykjavik to Birmingham with JFK and ATL as intermediate stops.     We had a mixed fruit breakfast and good strong coffee in the Retreat, and they took us directly to the disembarking location where we exited the ship, retrieved our luggage, and boarded our shuttle bus for the about 1-1/2 hr drive to Reykjavik airport.     It was so efficient that we had to wait 45 minutes to drop off our luggage.     Walking through the airport we were greeted by a life-size Iceland Troll.   We boarded the Reykjavik to JFK plane on time and settled in for a 5-1/2 hr flight.     We had very nice flying weather and had great views of the NYC area as we approached JFK.   We landed and had a very long walk to Passport Control.     I breezed through with Global Entry, but the biometrics picture for Bev had a glitch and she had to visit an officer who...

Day 7 – August 7, 2025 – a Day at Sea Sailing to Reykjavik [arrive 5 am, August 8, 2025]

Image
Our last day is a day at sea making our way back to Reykjavik.     We packed this morning and attended a seminar on the volcanos of Iceland, which was most interesting.     The country is certainly a country of living geology with numerous sites of recent volcanos; not all of which are explosive.     Some just ooze lava!     Such an interesting place.     The rest of the day was spent relaxing and reading.     In the afternoon, we had clear sailing weather and had good views of the rugged, Iceland coastline.     We had dinner in the Luminae.     Bev had roasted guinea hen,  and I had roast lamp loin.     I had dark chocolate ganache for dessert  and Bev had strawberry sorbet.     Afterwards we attended the   On Broadway   theater show.   Tomorrow will be an early morning wake up so we can depart the ship at 7 am and catch the bus that will take us to the Reykjavik...

Day 6 – August 6, 2025 – Isafjordur [ 9 am to 7 pm]

Image
We woke up this morning anchored in Isafjordur, which is the largest town (2,200 inhabitants) in the Westfjords peninsula and known for its breathtaking landscapes. The town started as a trading post in the 16th century with growth triggered in the 19th century by salt fish production which is still the most important industry for the town.   Fish Farming After a full breakfast (no lunch where we are going today), we boarded the tender boat for a ride from the ship to the dock area.    Because we were 1.5 hrs. early for our excursion to the Dynjandi waterfall, we spent some time walking around the downtown area  Town Museum and stopping in several shops.  At 10:30 am we gathered at the bus pickup point and boarded for the 1+ hr ride to the waterfall.  The ride went through 2 tunnels, one being 7 km and the other 3 km in length, that took us from Isafjordur to three fjords to the west.  The scenery was very pretty  with the...

Day 5 – August 5, 2025 – Akureyri [until 7 pm 8/5/25]

Image
Today is our second day in Akureyri and we plan to sightsee in the city.     After breakfast and catching up/posting on the trip blog we headed out into the city at 10 am.     We walked to the city square and then up Hafnarstraeti which is lined with stores and cafes.     At the big red heart (I love Akureyri)  we made the decision to continue along the same street, which took us into the old section of town and some brightly painted buildings.     Instead of continuing on after 0.5 mile along Hafnarstraeti, we climbed the steps which became a passageway through a wooded area up to Eyrarlandsvegur street where we exited onto the street just beyond the Akureyri Church.     Continuing along Eyrarlandsvegur, we passed the small St. Peter’s Catholic church,  and the Akureyri Junior College before arriving at the East Gate to the Botanical Gardens, which were begun in 1911.     It is the world’s most northern Botanical Gar...
